Welcome to our farm! We were a couple of “city-kids” who wanted to live the country/homestead life. Neither of us had experience with tending livestock or the property we have but we were excited to learn and dive in. We were blessed with the opportunity to live out our dream when Steve’s job brought us to Iowa in 2013. Building up this little 17-acre property has been full of learning, growth, and discovery. Much of what we have done has been research based trial and error learning and seeking the experience and wisdom of others living this lifestyle.
We believe every day there’s an opportunity to learn something new. So far it has been an amazing journey with many redoes of what we thought was a great idea until we introduced animals. They showed us the errors of your limited thinking. There is a continual learning curve as we proceed with our ventures on the farm. That has been frustratingly fun. Our family worked hard to transform the acreage into a working farm/homestead. With more work to be done to make it as we add features to the farm.
We started our livestock adventure with 5 chickens a year after we arrived on the property. That quickly grew to 40 chickens, 10 ducks, 2 geese and 10 guineas and continues to grow. Chicken math is really a thing. We added 6 goats and 6 babydoll sheep and 2 highland cattle in 2020, thinking that would hold us over to learn the animals. And it did, until we decided to breed our does and ewes a year and a half later. Our goat breeder needed to find a new home for her herd…why not!? 19 goats later we were on our way breeding goats. We bought our first ram and began breeding babydoll sheep as well. Learning how the animals all work together to manage the land as well as using their by-products such as milk, wool, and even their waste in composting has been fascinating.
We explored the possibilities of products with goat milk. This led us into a new adventure of goat milk soap and lotions. With the wool, we make wool pellets for gardening. We compost the waste to use on our various gardens. As the farm has grown, we are enjoying the new adventures of producing goat milk products and hope to build opportunities for others to experience the farm.
Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.
The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.
There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don’t look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn’t anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc.
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
